Why are In-Home Services needed?

Sometimes, seniors need just a little bit of help to remain living at home.  Sometimes, families need just a little bit of help in caring for an elder relative in the home.  And, long-distance families often need to ensure that an elder relative in Florida is receiving the care and support required.  Each of these needs can be met through providing periodic assistance in the home.

What kind of In-Home Services are available?

The Council on Aging either directly provides or contracts for the following services for homebound seniors.  A homebound senior includes anyone over the age of 60 who is unable to leave the family home without assistance.

·        Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative – In-home care for a family member with any type of memory disorder, allowing the caregiver time away from home.

·        Case Aide/Companion – A Case Aide/Companion provides personal assistance to isolated, homebound seniors, i.e., delivering medical equipment, running errands, reading correspondence, etc.

·        Chore Services
Home/Yard cleaning and maintenance is available when essential to a senior’s health or safety.

·        Home Care for the Elderly
A monthly subsidy is provided to family caregivers of low-income seniors and assistance is provided to help pay for prescriptions and medical supplies not covered by Medicaid.

·        Homemaking

Shopping, house cleaning, cooking and laundering services are available to homebound elders.

·        Meals on Wheels
Warm, noontime meals on weekdays and frozen weekend meals for homebound seniors who are unable to shop or cook.

·        Personal Care
Help with bathing and grooming for homebound seniors.

·        Respite Care
A family caregiver of any age can enjoy time away from home and responsibilities while a trained aide cares for the dependent senior.

What are the costs associated with In-Home Services?
Since Medicare does not pay for In-Home Services, there are several options for payment.  Some seniors are given the service free of charge through Medicaid.  Some seniors are asked to make a donation toward the costs.  Some seniors make a co-payment with government funding paying the balance.  And, some seniors pay a fee covering the entire cost of the service. The payment option is determined through the interview and intake process.
