What is Meals on Wheels?

The Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels provides a hot, noontime meal to those who are unable to shop or cook. The hot meals are delivered to the home Monday through Friday, with weekend and breakfast meals available upon request.

Who is Eligible for Meals on Wheels?

Meals are available to all Martin County residents who have a need for this service.  The senior’s family caregiver is also eligible to receive Meals on Wheels.

What is the cost for Meals on Wheels?

The cost of a hot, noontime meal is $4.15.  Breakfast meals cost $2.75 each. Some seniors may qualify to receive free meals, depending on physical or financial need.  Contact the Council on Aging for more information regarding meal costs.

What types of meals are delivered?

We can provide any therapeutic diet needed including:  diabetic, low-sodium, low-cholesterol, healthy heart, low-calorie, high-calorie, lactose free, low-reside, vegetarian, renal diet for kidney dialysis patients, and pureed or mechanical-mix (coarsely chopped) meals for those who have difficulty swallowing.  All meals meet one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) for those age 60 and over.

How are meals delivered?

To keep costs very affordable, volunteers are used to deliver over 250 meals per day throughout Martin County.  All volunteers undergo a criminal background check and are trained in how to respond in an emergency.  In addition, our volunteers are a daily, in-person contact with Meals on Wheels recipients who are often alone or isolated.

How do I sign up for Meals on Wheels?

Delivery is just one phone call away! If you need a meal or have a family member or friend who can benefit from this service, please call the Council on Aging of Martin County at 772-223-7800.  Full week or partial week service is available.

What other services are available?

Nutritional education is provided by our staff to all meal recipients on a monthly basis. This can include home-delivered information on how to prevent dehydration and cost-saving measures for those on special diets.

Is help getting adequate nutrition available for active seniors?

Yes!  Senior Dining Centers are an alternative for active seniors who need assistance getting enough to eat.  The centers can also provide an opportunity to meet and socialize with other seniors. Volunteers are always needed to help serve and clean up.  The centers are open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  Please call the senior dining center nearest you or simply show up to sign up for a hot, noontime meal served in a group setting Monday through Friday.  Senior Dining Centers are at the locations below:
